Nigeria Earns $62 Million from Airline Ticket Taxes in 2024
Nigeria generated a total of $62 million from airline ticket taxes in 2024, according to newly released data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The revenue forms part of a broader $1.97 billion collected across Africa during the year and contributes to the global total of $60.3 billion in ticket-tax revenue recorded worldwide. IATA’s report highlights that the Nigerian government earned an average of $7.6 per departing passenger, a figure that underscores the contribution of ticket taxes to national coffers. Analysts note that while the $62 million is significant, it reflects only specific ticket taxes, excluding other levies such as airport charges, security fees, and fuel surcharges. The aviation body emphasised that ticket taxes remain a key source of revenue for governments, though they can also influence travel costs and passenger decisions. With Nigeria’s air travel market growing steadily, the contribution from ticket taxes is expected to rise, maintaining the sector’s role as both a revenue generator and a driver of economic activity.
