Nigeria Cruise Past Mozambique to Reach AFCON Quarter Finals

News Image

Nigeria booked a place in the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a convincing 4 0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16. The Super Eagles controlled the contest from the opening stages and took the lead in the 20th minute through Ademola Lookman, who finished calmly from inside the penalty area. Five minutes later, Nigeria doubled their advantage as Lookman’s cross was helped on by Akor Adams, allowing Victor Osimhen to tap into an empty net at the back post. Mozambique created little in response, with their best chance falling to Faisal Bangal, whose close range header went wide before the interval. Osimhen added his second goal shortly after the restart, again finishing from close range following another delivery from Lookman. Nigeria continued to press and sealed the win late on when Akor Adams beat his marker and fired into the near top corner. The result marks Nigeria’s joint biggest win at the Africa Cup of Nations and sends them into the quarter finals, where they will face either Algeria or DR Congo.
