China Cracks Down on Underground Churches Amid Rising Arrests of Christian Leaders
China’s current arrests of church leaders and demolition of church buildings follow years of growing tension between the state and underground Christian groups, according to the BBC. For decades, the Communist Party has required Christians to worship only in state sanctioned churches, led by government approved pastors. Many believers rejected this, leading to the spread of underground churches across the country. In earlier years, enforcement was slower. Church leaders were often warned or fined before arrests were made. That approach has now changed. At least two church leaders said authorities are now acting far more quickly, with unauthorised leaders being arrested without the earlier stages of warning. A major shift came in 2015, when President Xi Jinping introduced the policy of “Sinicisation of religions”, requiring faith groups to align with Communist Party ideology. Since then, control has tightened steadily. One of the clearest examples came in 2018, when police raided the Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu. Its founder, Pastor Wang Yi, was later jailed for “inciting subversion of state power” and “illegal business operations”. He remains in prison and is due for release in 2027. The pressure has continued. Churches have been shut, leaders detained, and online religious activities restricted. In Wenzhou, a city known for its large Christian population, churches have faced repeated raids and demolitions. Ahead of the latest arrests, Early Rain’s current leader, Li Yingqiang, warned of what was coming. “I sensed a storm gathering,” he wrote, referring to “the imminent prospect of another large scale crackdown.” Rights groups say the situation reflects a deeper struggle. “Xi Jinping’s government has tightened ideological control and intensified its intolerance of loyalties beyond the Chinese Communist Party,” said Yalkun Uluyol of Human Rights Watch. This latest wave is part of a long history of conflict between a state determined to maintain control and Christian groups determined to practise their faith outside government authority.
