Hoodlums Attack Anambra Church, Kill Two and Burn Structures
Two people were killed on Sunday after armed assailants invaded St Andrews Anglican Church in Isiokwe Lilu, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. One of the victims was the wife of the resident priest, whose home was also set ablaze during the attack. The incident occurred in the early hours when the attackers stormed the church premises, opened fire and set buildings and vehicles on fire. By dawn, the clergy house had been reduced to rubble and at least two vehicles were burnt. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the attack and said officers responded after receiving distress calls. The Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, noted that the bodies of the victims were recovered and investigations had begun. The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, directed additional deployments to the area and launched a manhunt for the suspects. Witness accounts gathered by various outlets indicate that the attackers fled before security teams arrived. The motive for the assault is still unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility. The attack has stirred anxiety within the community, where residents are still trying to make sense of the scale of destruction. Security operations have since been intensified across the area as authorities work to trace the perpetrators and prevent further incidents.
