FG Throws Open Free Technical Education Nationwide, Applications Begin as Thousands of Nigerian Youths Eye New Skills Pathway

The Federal Government has moved to reinforce its promise on skills based education, opening applications for admission into Federal Technical Colleges across the country, a development that places technical training back at the centre of national policy. The announcement, released on Monday by the Federal Ministry of Education, follows approval by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa. Officials say the move reflects a renewed focus on practical learning, employable skills and widening access to vocational education for young Nigerians. Registration for the National Common Entrance Examination into Federal Technical Colleges is scheduled to begin on Monday, 26 January 2026, and will run until Sunday, 24 May 2026. The examination itself is expected to hold nationwide on Saturday, 6 June 2026, drawing candidates from all states. Prospective applicants are required to complete their registration through the National Business and Technical Examinations Board online portal. The Ministry stressed that a valid National Identification Number remains compulsory for all candidates, noting that applications without it will not be processed. Education officials also restated that tuition in Federal Technical Colleges is fully funded once admission is secured. The policy, they said, is aimed at strengthening human capital development, empowering youths and boosting productivity across key sectors of the economy. Admission is open to candidates between the ages of 13 and 20. Parents and guardians have been urged to follow official guidelines carefully and to depend only on information issued by the Ministry and recognised examination bodies.
