Senate Urges Tinubu to Exempt Lawmakers from Police Escort Withdrawal.
The Senate on Wednesday asked President Bola Tinubu to exclude lawmakers from his new order removing police escorts from VIPs. Several senators told the chamber that their police orderlies were withdrawn without notice, leaving them feeling unsafe. The President’s directive aims to redeploy thousands of officers back to core policing duties. While many Nigerians have welcomed the move, senators argued that their work often takes them into tense areas where they face constant risks. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau said the policy appeared uneven, noting that some influential figures outside government still moved around with heavy security. He called on the Presidency to restore the withdrawn escorts and recognise lawmakers as a special category. The Senate now waits for the President’s response as questions continue over how far the police withdrawal should go and who should be exempted.
