High-Capacity Bus Catches Fire on Third Mainland Bridge, Major Traffic Disruption Ensues
Lagos commuters faced chaos on Tuesday afternoon as a high-capacity commercial bus went up in flames on the Third Mainland Bridge. The incident, which occurred near the Adekunle area around 1:00 p.m., snarled traffic for motorists heading inbound towards Iyana Oworo. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the fire in a series of posts on its official X account. “A high-capacity bus is on fire on the Third Mainland Bridge, by Adekunle, inwards Iyana Oworo, affecting traffic,” the agency stated. LASTMA added that officers were on the scene managing traffic while personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked to put out the blaze. No casualties have been reported so far. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are yet to commence. The Third Mainland Bridge, Africa’s longest bridge at 11.8 kilometres, is a major artery for Lagos traffic. Accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and incidents such as this are known to cause significant delays for commuters. Traffic authorities have urged motorists to exercise patience and consider alternative routes until the situation is fully resolved.
