DSS Recaptures Infamous Ansaru Terrorist After Years on the Run.

News Image

In a stunning turn of events, Nigeria’s Department of State Services has recaptured Abdulazeez Obadaki, the notorious Ansaru operative who slipped away during the brazen Kuje prison break in 2022. For more than two years, Obadaki had eluded security forces, moving through shadows and safe havens while orchestrating violent operations across the country. His crimes include deadly attacks in Uromi and the shocking shooting at Deeper Life College in Okene, acts that sent ripples of fear through communities and security agencies alike. Friday’s arrest, carried out in a carefully planned intelligence operation, marks a decisive moment in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts. Officials say months of surveillance and painstaking investigation led to the capture, signalling that the fugitive network behind some of the country’s most audacious attacks is beginning to crumble. Obadaki’s recapture follows the earlier arrests of top Ansaru leaders, moves that have effectively dismantled the terror group’s central command. Yet security analysts warn that even with key figures in custody, Ansaru’s dispersed cells could still pose threats, underlining the ongoing challenge of rooting out violent networks that operate in the shadows. The Kuje jailbreak, which freed hundreds of inmates, had exposed glaring vulnerabilities in the prison system. Obadaki’s escape then had become a symbol of that failure — a ghost haunting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. His capture now reverses that narrative, offering a measure of closure and a message that the long arm of justice, however delayed, still reaches those who threaten the nation’s security. While the arrest of Obadaki is a tangible victory, experts emphasise that dismantling a terror network requires more than arrests. Sustained intelligence, rigorous prosecution, and unwavering security reforms will determine whether Nigeria can truly claim a turning point in the battle against Ansaru.

Tinubu Names Ribadu to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation to United States Security Working Group President Bola Tinubu has approved the Nigerian delegation to the Nigeria United States Joint Working Group, setting the stage for a fresh security partnership that officials describe as both urgent and strategic. At the centre of the team is the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who has been directed to lead the delegation. Senior government figures named to work alongside him include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard Doro. Also on the list are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. Their selection quietly signals the breadth of Nigeria’s security concerns and the level of coordination the Presidency expects. Secretariat duties were assigned to Idayat Hassan of the Office of the National Security Adviser and Paul Alabi of the Nigerian Embassy in Washington. The Presidency confirmed that the working group will activate agreements reached during recent high level engagements in Washington, where both countries committed to strengthened intelligence cooperation and support for Nigeria’s fight against violent crime and insurgency. In a brief but pointed statement, President Tinubu urged the appointed officials to, in his words, “work assiduously with their United States counterparts to ensure the smooth operationalisation of all agreements across sectors.” The tone from Abuja suggests that the administration views this alliance as a cornerstone of its wider security reforms, and officials close to the process say the coming weeks will determine how swiftly the partnership can be translated from paper to the field.
