Tinubu Declares National Emergency on Security as Government Moves to Reinforce Defense Structures.

President Bola Tinubu has declared a national emergency on security, setting in motion the most sweeping reorganization of Nigeria’s internal defense structure in recent years. The announcement, delivered against the backdrop of rising anxiety over serial kidnappings and violent attacks across several states, marked a turning point in the administration’s response to the deteriorating situation. In a firm voice that carried through the hall, Tinubu ordered an immediate expansion of security manpower. The Nigeria Police Force is to undergo an accelerated recruitment exercise, with fresh intakes expected to raise its operational strength significantly. The Armed Forces are also to absorb new personnel, a move intended to reinforce overstretched formations in rural and urban flashpoints. To fast track this mobilization, the government has approved the use of National Youth Service Corps camps as temporary training facilities. Officers previously assigned to escort duties for high profile individuals are to return to regular operations after undergoing rapid retraining, an instruction signalling the government’s intent to redirect resources to areas facing the most pressure. Intelligence services have been handed a renewed mandate. The Department of State Services is expected to deploy trained forest security units, expanding its presence in the remote corridors where armed groups have long exploited Nigeria’s difficult terrain. Tinubu promised that such spaces would “no longer provide a cover for criminal operations”. The declaration followed reports of multiple mass abductions involving schoolchildren, worshipers and residents in isolated communities. These incidents, occurring in quick succession, had amplified public frustration and triggered urgent calls from legislators, advocacy groups and traditional leaders. Tinubu appealed to state governments to proceed with their plans for community based policing structures while coordinating closely with federal agencies. He also advised schools, religious centers and farming communities to strengthen internal vigilance measures as a matter of necessity. Across the country, reactions carried a mixture of relief and caution. The announcement has raised expectations that the federal government is finally shifting from rhetoric to action, yet the true test lies in whether these measures can break the cycle of violence that has gripped several regions for years. For now, the streets remain watchful, waiting to see if this emergency declaration will bring the measure of safety long promised by successive administrations but never fully delivered.

Tinubu Names Ribadu to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation to United States Security Working Group President Bola Tinubu has approved the Nigerian delegation to the Nigeria United States Joint Working Group, setting the stage for a fresh security partnership that officials describe as both urgent and strategic. At the centre of the team is the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who has been directed to lead the delegation. Senior government figures named to work alongside him include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard Doro. Also on the list are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. Their selection quietly signals the breadth of Nigeria’s security concerns and the level of coordination the Presidency expects. Secretariat duties were assigned to Idayat Hassan of the Office of the National Security Adviser and Paul Alabi of the Nigerian Embassy in Washington. The Presidency confirmed that the working group will activate agreements reached during recent high level engagements in Washington, where both countries committed to strengthened intelligence cooperation and support for Nigeria’s fight against violent crime and insurgency. In a brief but pointed statement, President Tinubu urged the appointed officials to, in his words, “work assiduously with their United States counterparts to ensure the smooth operationalisation of all agreements across sectors.” The tone from Abuja suggests that the administration views this alliance as a cornerstone of its wider security reforms, and officials close to the process say the coming weeks will determine how swiftly the partnership can be translated from paper to the field.
