PDP Blasts APC Over Rivers Governor Fubara’s Defection
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating political manoeuvres that forced Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to defect. Fubara officially joined the APC on Tuesday, citing lack of protection from his former party and support from President Bola Tinubu as key reasons. The PDP described the defection as emblematic of Nigeria’s fragile democracy, where powerful individuals can override institutional structures. Tanimu Turaki-led national leaders warned that the ruling party’s actions threaten the political space and could push the country toward a one-party system. Fubara’s defection consolidates APC control in the South-South region, with six states now governed by the ruling party. At a stakeholders’ meeting, Fubara affirmed the move was in the state’s interest, receiving applause from supporters as the PDP flag was removed from Government House, Port Harcourt. PDP officials, while critical, expressed pity for Fubara, noting his political troubles were largely self-inflicted and cautioning against psychological alignment with his new party, a reference to what they termed “Stockholm Syndrome.” The development intensifies scrutiny of party loyalty and democratic norms in Nigeria.
