Oshiomhole’s Empowerment Drive in Edo North Gains Traction Among Women and Youths
Benin City – In a concerted effort to tackle economic hardship at the grassroots, Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole has moved to empower residents of Edo North through a structured skills‑acquisition programme that has attracted widespread attention. Over 300 women and youths from across the senatorial district have completed intensive training in practical trades as part of a broader constituency development project, aimed at boosting self‑reliance and fostering small business creation. The empowerment initiative, facilitated in collaboration with Auchi Polytechnic and Sam Ella Water Gate Limited, provided four days of hands‑on instruction in income‑generating skills. Participants gained expertise in the production of liquid soap, detergent, bar soap and perfumes, among other products. The training concluded with a pledge of starter packs and take‑off support to enable beneficiaries to launch their own enterprises. At the closing ceremony in Uzairue, representatives of Oshiomhole, who was unable to attend in person, underscored the long‑term goals of the programme. The senator’s Chief of Staff, Hon. Victor Oshioke, described the empowerment effort as part of a series of projects embedded in Oshiomhole’s constituency work – designed to reduce dependence on limited white‑collar opportunities and instead cultivate entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihood pathways at the local level. Beneficiaries, many of whom had previously struggled to secure steady income, expressed gratitude and optimism. Several women spoke of plans to expand their work into fully fledged small businesses, creating employment for others in their communities. Community leaders have hailed the initiative as timely, asserting that such targeted skills training, backed by starter resources, could play a meaningful role in addressing unemployment and economic stagnation in the region. The empowerment programme aligns with other recent constituency interventions by the senator, which have included support for households during festive periods and the launch of infrastructure projects. While opinions differ on the political implications of Oshiomhole’s presence in Edo North, there is broad agreement that practical empowerment schemes of this kind resonate deeply with residents who are seeking tangible improvements in their day‑to‑day lives.
