FG Reacts as UK Declares Northern Nigeria High-Risk Zone
The Federal Government has vowed to take decisive steps after the United Kingdom classified several northern states as security-risk areas. According to Punch Newspapers, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office issued an updated travel advisory warning its citizens against visiting parts of northern and north-central Nigeria due to “terrorism, kidnapping and violent crime.” In a swift response, the Federal Government expressed concern over the advisory, saying it does not accurately represent the country’s current security situation. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, was quoted as saying the government “takes the advisory seriously but believes the UK assessment does not fully reflect recent progress made in restoring peace and order across the country.” He explained that the government is “actively engaging with international partners to ensure that information on Nigeria’s security landscape is balanced and factual.” Idris also emphasized that significant security operations have been ongoing in the affected regions, noting that “our security forces have recorded commendable successes against terrorist elements, bandits and other criminal networks.” He assured Nigerians and the international community that the administration “will continue to strengthen intelligence sharing, reinforce law enforcement capacity and sustain military offensives until normalcy is fully restored.” Security analysts, however, warn that such advisories could discourage investment and damage Nigeria’s international image. A senior security consultant told Punch Newspapers that “the travel warning, if not properly managed, may cause unnecessary panic and affect business confidence in the north.” Despite the concerns, government officials insist that improvements in security are visible and measurable. “The situation is not as bleak as painted,” a senior presidency source reportedly said. “We understand the UK’s caution, but we are working tirelessly to change that perception.” The Federal Government said it remains committed to ensuring that all Nigerians and visitors can move freely and safely across the country, while calling on foreign governments to update their advisories as the situation improves.
